🇬🇧 Traduction EN

On my way to school, I pass by the grocery store, still closed at that hour, with its bottles of milk stacked in front of the door by the delivery man. One morning—I don't know what came over me—I stole one. I hid under a porch to drink it quietly. But a neighbor, retired colonel Pigeat, caught me, and dragged me home by the ear.

"Attention!" he shouted, "attention, clockmaker infantryman" (he called him infantryman because my father had done his military service in the infantry, in the kitchens), "I have the honor of informing you that your son has committed a petty theft: he stole milk, he's a highway robber."

My father left the clock he had been bent over and slowly came toward me, never taking his eyes off me. I was mortified with shame. He asked me gently:

"Are you short of milk here, Son?"

"No, Pa', no."

"Do you want to be the death of your father by turning into a highway robber, is that it?"

"No, Pa', no."

That evening, my father was waiting for me when I got back from school:

"Never steal anything again. Anything you might steal, your father can buy for you."

On the table stood a crate of twenty-four bottles of milk.

"There's only the Moon that your father can't get you. Go on, steal that if you like, Son."
